WHAT IS PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication for HIV-negative individuals who are concerned about their HIV risk.
PrEP can be taken in the form of pills or injections. There are two pills approved as PrEP: Truvada and Descovy. Apretude is the only injection approved for the use of PrEP. Several studies have shown that PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV when taken as prescribed.
PrEP is highly effective against HIV but doesn’t protect against other STDs. Combining PrEP with condoms will provide additional protection against HIV and STDs. PrEP is not a vaccine against HIV nor a cure for HIV.
DOES PrEP REALLY WORK?
Studies have shown that PrEP is 99% effective at reducing the risk of getting HIV from sex when used as directed.
Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduced the risk of getting HIV by more than 70%. PrEP is most effective when combined with other prevention methods such as condoms. PrEP can be taken even if drinking alcohol, using recreational drugs, or taking hormones.
